Before College and After College Training & Racing

Before College Running

High school runners try to prepare for college running by reading running books, running magazines and going to college meets.  However, no matter how you look at it, there is just no easy way to prepare for all of it.

The college runner is more developed and faster than 90% of high school runners. Yes, you will always have that 10% of high school runners that are capable of running the 800 meters in 1:50.5  or the 9:05 two mile runner with a 4:08 mile. But for most high school runners, it will be a challenging experience translating high school success into college victories. It can be extremely intimidating to show up and train with a runner who  is 30 seconds faster than you without trying!  However, such competition will force you to train faster and harder than ever before.

There is such talent and diversity on the college level. Many high school runners have never experienced so much talent in one place before. They may have had a high school runner or two who was capable of running under a 9:30 two mile or a 4:20 mile.  However, they probably never encountered four or five runners on the same team who can run such times without even trying. You know you are a long way from high school training when the easy runs feel like a tempo workout!

Most high school runners find out that they are not as fast or as strong as they thought they were. However, In time and with a good training program, such as GENESIS SUB 2, most can develop into one of the best runners in their school, conference, and nationally.

Running After College

For the successful college runner, the ones who were victorious at conferences and nationals, the sky is the limit. After college competition and through training with some of the best clubs, they may be able to move up to the pro level. Some of these top runners may already have some experience racing the big boys from major invitationals around the country.  However, progressing from a college athlete to a professional one can also take about a one to three year adjustment.
